Saturday 22nd June – walk ***** sunny periods :)

It was raining this morning so we had a bit of a lie in and read then after a shower went in to have coffee with Peter and Sally. Went to the ‘Co’ (the co-op and one of only two shops on the island). Headed for Vaul beach to park and have lunch then set out to walk to the Broch which is an ancient dwelling built with rock under and over ground on the grassy rocky land on the coast. It is amazing and unbelievably dates from 60AD. You can see the shape of several rooms and there are some steps leading up to what would have been the next floor. We loved it :) On the way to the Broch we passed a cottage with its own beach and surrounded by sheep grazing – its turns out it is actually a folly but is absolutely beautiful and in the perfect position. We carried on across the boggy grassy rocky ground which is covered in buttercups and orchids. We were looking for the Ringing Stone and after a couple of wrong turns we eventually found it on the beach. It is a huge, completely different kind of stone to the ones it stands on and is thought to have been brought down from the Island of Rum by a glacier in the ice age. When you hit it with another rock it makes a metallic ringing sound. It has lots of dents and hollows which apparently are linked to ancient ceremonies. We walked back by a more direct route but definitely had our 6 mile legs by the time we got back to the van. We had an amazing bird watching day, seeing lots of unusual birds including a few firsts for us. The best thing was all the baby birds we saw! The baby Oyster catcher was very lucky because it was wedged into a sandy bank and I nearly stood on it! A list is at the end of this diary entry. Also saw a common seal and lots of hare. We drove to Crossapoll beach for our tea and watched the amazing surfy waves – they were huge! Drove round the roads at about 10 mph seeing many more birds on the fence posts. Popped in to have a quick chat about the day with Peter and Sally and then out to the van for a cuppa and to batten down the hatches for a rough and windy night.
